This morning, I was scrolling the different stories on Facebook and Twitter and just as the title says, I saw the good, the bad, and the ugly. Don't worry, I won't get into Clint Eastwood and his past antics, but the title fits. Anyway,  to no surprise, most of the post were about the presidential race and many were about Donald Trump and his latest comments. As I began to look at the different post, I was also led to other Facebook users who were not "friends." I went to their pages that were based in places like North Carolina, Virginia, and other parts of the south. Many of them had anti-Obama post and other post promoting "Southern Pride" replete with images surrounding the Confederate flag and the "southern way of life." On the other hand, I went to pages that were anti-Trump. These pages either expressed wanting to do physical harm to Trump and his supporters or post making fun of the presidential candidate. There were other post making...

Vote Aqui!

Image
Good morning.  I was just at the polls a couple of hours ago.  Being a student of history, I couldn't help but think of the struggles many had to go through in order to vote.  I especially thought of my own ancestors realizing that many feared for their lives at the mere thought of voting.  They had to put up with all sorts of threats and clauses like the Grandfather Clause that was put into place to discourage the African American vote.  My grandfather voted in the 2008 presidential election.  He was 90 years old at the time, and never "thought that he would ever see a colored president."  Sorry Mr. President, he was 90 years old.  To him, everyone was either white or colored.  Now, my grandfather has gone home to glory, so he left this basic and very important civic duty up to his children and grand children.  So, once again, I exercised that right this morning for my grandfather and his grandfather.  It felt good.  P...

Obama's headed to Ghana

Image
US President Barak Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and daughters Sasha and Malia are set to arrive in Accra, Ghana late Friday evening. On Saturday, July 11, the Obama family is scheduled to have breakfast with Ghanaian President, John Atta Mills. Afterwards, President Barack Obama will address the Ghanaian parliament on development and democracy. The Obama family will then fly to visit the Cape Coast Castle (aka Slave Castles), which holds the dungeons that are connected to many African Americans and Africans in the Diaspora. It is the former headquarters of the British slave trade in West Africa. So, this will be a very important trip for the Obama family. Yes, it is official US business, but a trip like this has to especially touch the First Lady, Michele Obama, who is a direct descendant of Sub Saharan Africa. I’m wondering how she will handle facing the horror that her ancestors faced with the Cape Coast Castle dungeons? There are many who have passed out in grief or simpl...

Inaugural Thoughts

Image
Well, I didn't make any of the Inaugural events. I stayed home with my wife who is on crutches. She encouraged me to go to the African Diaspora Ball and the events downtown, but I stayed home and we watched it together on CNN; It was nice. I'm a little sad that I missed it up close and live, but I definitely did not want to miss it without my mosadi -- my loving wife. Were you there in person? Tell us about it:

After '08: What's Next?

Have you ever had conversation with someone you felt would be a great writer or blogger? I mean, this person's opinion or commentary is always so insightful and interesting. This is what I think of my brother, Moorosi Mokuena. This native South African is new on the blog scene, but a veteran when it comes to politics and activism. Check him out and give him some good 'ol blogger support. In the long run, I don't think that you will be disappointed -- the best has yet to come. Peace~ Photo: Moorosi and Congresswoman Maxine Waters at South African Freedom Day reception in Washington, D.C. (photo taken by: S. Bess) Moorosi's blog: Beyond '08

Grandmama for Obama

Image
I'm getting ready to watch the Palin and Biden debate this evening. This is a recent picture of my maternal grandmother. Can't you tell -- just look at that round face and nose. That's my mother and cousin in the background. Anyway, my grandmother loves herself some Barack Obama. I asked her if she was going to get out and vote and she just replied, "Yea!...Obama!" I'll take that as a yes. *smile*
