Photography: Today's Lunchbreak

Image
During lunch today I saw this poster advertising The Brand New Heavies . I want to go to this show! They're going to be performing at the 9:30 Club on V St. NW on October 20th. "Spending some time making love...making plans to last forever...Staying true until the end....Never Stop never giving up!" This is also during my lunch break. These are some street performers on 19th street near the subway. These brothers could play! I even gave them a dollar! Hey, that's good for me. :) (By the way, the guy on the sax is not me) Bonus photo This is me giving my wife a shadow kiss. She was near me at first and then she slipped through my fingers! She told me to hold that pose. Can you guess where I was trying to kiss her? *grin* Enjoy your weekend! Peace~

Bessie Smith: In Memoriam

Image
Bessie Smith was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on April 15, 1894. As an adult, Bessie was what my uncle Mack would call a "big ol’ fine woman!" She stood around 6 feet tall and weighed in excess of 200 lbs. She was a heavy weight, big boned, thick, dark and lovely, big beautiful woman ( BBW ) of African descent; an Empress. Did I say Empress? Yes, they called her the Empress of the Blues. She knew the Blues personally and sang them like the evening news. Bessie could curse and caress in the same breath. She was a very quiet and sweet woman, but with her money and feelings you couldn’t mess. She loved hard liquor, hard men, but a woman soft and sweet she’d take. She was an equal opportunity lover and in her lyrics she wouldn’t fake. She’d croon: “I ain’t no high yella, I’m a deep killer brown. I ain’t gonna marry, ain’t gonna settle down. I’m gonna drink good moonshine and rub these browns down, See that long lonesome road, Lawd you know it’s gonna end, And I’...

Autumn's Eve

Image
I am accepting Rethabile's ( Sotho ) challenge of finishing the sentence, "It is Autumn and this road..." I hope that you guys have a wonderful weekend! Once again, thanks for joining the poetry movement all about one of my favorite seasons, Autumn. Peace~ “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 It is Autumn, and this road represents my ascension into the unknown. It is my faith that will carry me and his hand that will guide me. Amen Photo: This is a photo that I took out of my sunroof on Interstate 395 going north. Check out Bess Photos on Flickr for my latest photos.

I feel that it can. What do you think? Jamaican poet, novelist and educator, Geoffrey Philp posted this question along with an anonymous poll on his blog. I gave my vote and 2 cents. He is interested in knowing what you all think? Click post title to comment and vote. Peace~

Photography: Plantain Lady

Image
My wife often laments about not knowing how to pick the perfect plantain. She didn't grow up on plantains in her native South Africa so they are new to her in terms of cooking them. She knows that I like them so she likes to make them for me now and then. This picture was taken of her about 2 weeks ago when she had just finished cutting up an entire plate ready to drop. They were so delicious looking that I had to capture that moment on my camera. Thank you, love. They tasted so good! By the way, I'll be away from blogger for a couple of days so...until next week. Meanwhile, I'll be searching for interesting facts about history, art and culture that I can share with you all. Peace~

Photography: Crayola Capital

Blue Dome: Angry Brother Capital Reflection Dem' Pink Tops I hope that you enjoy my little display of the Capital here in Washington, D.C. These pictures were taken last Saturday afternoon. It was a quiet and cloudy day here in DC and my brother, Thomas was a willing participant as the "Angry Brother." Capital police guarding the Capital took necessary precautions and came around on their bikes and sort of looked us over. That's cool. Hooray for Homeland Security! By the way, my brother will be heading back to Atlanta this weekend and he will definitely be missed. If you live in the DC area come check him out tonight during Open Mic at Busboys & Poets . It's located on 14th street. The time is from 9pm to 11pm, but the line is usually kind of long so a good time to arrive is around 6:30pm. Much thanks~

Friday Bookish Tag

Good morning! I was tagged by Michael J. West . That’s cool because he wants me to talk about my favorite subject, books! Thanks Michael. So, like da here it go! 1. Book that changed your life: That book would definitely be After Hours , by Edwin Torres. It was 1986 and I was in the Navy. We had been out at sea for more than 3 weeks when I picked up this book in the ship’s library. This was the first book I read that was not assigned by a teacher. I was 19. I’ve been intrigued ever since. Honorable mention: How Can Man Die Better?: The Life of Robert Sobukwe , by Benjamin Pogrun. This book is the reason that I met my wife. That’s another blog. 2. Book you've read more than once: I write what I like , by Stephen Biko. I first tried to read this book as a freshman (1990) in college. I put it down out of frustration because of all the grand words and ideas concerning Apartheid. I revisited the book in 1996 and I actually thought that it was changed because I understood so we...

It's Labor Day ! This holiday is not connected to any battle. It was actually created to recognize the contributions of workers across America. It is on the first Monday of September. I also hope that all of my international friends have a great weekend as well. Peace~
