This is America Symbolism

Image
Like many, I am intrigued by Donald Glover's (Aka. Childish Gambino) new video, "This is America." I have been a fan of Glover's FX television series, "Atlanta" for some time, but I have not really explored his music until I watched Jordan Peele's film, Get Out. The film opened featuring Childish Gambino's song, "Redbone." Since then, I have been interested. It is safe to say that I am a true fan after hearing and viewing this shockingly creative song and video. Whooo! Anyway, I am not going to attempt to break down this video in my own words. I will allow this video from Time to do the talking. Yes, "This is America."

Mother King: In Memoriam

Image
On June 30, 1974 Mrs. Alberta Williams King, mother of slain Civil Rights leader and activist, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was shot and killed during a Sunday morning church service at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga. Mother King was at the organ playing “The Lord’s Prayer” when the shooting occurred. Deacon, Edward Boykin, was also killed in this violent attack. The assailant, Marcus Wayne Chennault Jr., an African American from Dayton, Ohio, was later convicted and sentenced to death. That sentence was upheld for many years and later changed to life in prison at a state prison in Jackson, Georgia. On August 3, 1995, only two months after his sentence was changed to a life sentence, Chennault suffered a stroke, never regained consciousness and died. He was 44.  Although Mother King's death is rarely mentioned or remembered in the media, she must be remembered as not only a mother of one of the greatest leaders in the 20th Centurty, but for her supporting ...

Poetry: Thomas Bess Jr.

I wanted to leave you guys with a little poetry for the weekend. A couple of you have already seen this video, but I wanted to share it with the rest of the community. The artist is my younger brother Thomas. His music and life is based in Atlanta, GA. He is a spoken word artist, painter, brother, and friend. Thomas is featured on a few cd's in the business, but his latest solo effort is called Action Theory . This is Thomas' first solo cd and it is tight! The best has yet to come. For sentimental reasons, I'm still attached to his premiere cd as a member of the Atlanta based group, Jason Blackwell. the cd is titled, Urban Experimentalist . The featured video performance can not be heard on either cd, but it's definitely worth hearing. Keep in mind that some of the language may offend. Also, I did the camera work so forgive the bootleg quality of the video. *smile* Enjoy your weekend. Peace~

Welcome To The Land Of Red Clay

Every year I have to decide whether I am staying in DC for Thanksgiving or going to Atlanta. I am certain that my situation is not a unique one. You see, my parents have been divorced since the early 1970's. So, during the holidays I have to decide which holiday I am going to spend with each parent(Mother=D.C., Father=ATL). This year I am going to take that drive to Atlanta to be with my father and my family there. I always look forward to returning to Georgia because that is where I spent all of my college years (class of '94) between Atlanta and Savannah. I'll get to see some of my friends because most of them are from the Atlanta metro area or they moved there after college. I'll also get to hang out with my younger brother. We usually head to East Atlanta, Little Five Points, or to my old spot, Apache Cafe. Anyway, it will be good to see everyone and spend some time with people that I love and care for. I hope that all that view this blog will have a safe and wonder...
