I grew up in the Linda Pollin Memorial Housing Projects. First of all, I did not know that it was built in memory of Abe Pollin's daughter. In fact, I didn't even know the name, Abe Pollin. I was a child, so I thought it was just a name given to the apartments. At the time, my siblings and I had no idea that we lived in a housing project. Well, the complex had a swimming pool, and the grounds were well kept. Also, it didn't resemble the well known surrounding projects like Valley Green , Condon Terrace , or Wahler Place . The manager was Ms. Royster who was sort of a no-nonsense type of landlord based on the conversations I heard from grownups. However, she seemed nice; plus, we all played with and knew her son, John. This is one of my favorite bookstores in DC. This is the sidewalk sale at Second Story Books in Dupont Circle. The sidewalk sale only occurs if the weather is at or above about 50 degrees. The books usually sale for around $4 but they sometime go for as low as $2. This picture was taken yesterday afternoon. I didn't buy any yesterday, but I've found some really great used books (sometimes out of print) here over the years. Where are my used book lovers out there?

Yes, I've bought a couple of used records there too. They have a great selection! One problem...I don't own a record player. :)
When I lived in southern West Virginia, there was a small used bookstore that I always passed on my way to school. I always stopped even if I didn't buy anything just to roam through the stacks. I found it so relaxing just to go through and look at the books as if each one was an old friend. I always envied the owner who got to spend his entire day in the company of these books.
Thanks for bringing back that memory. It is one of my favorites!
I've always loved the atmosphere of this store. They usually have alternative music playing on old speakers that are placed around the store. There is much comfort there.

What up! I feel you. I have to stop buying books just so I can read the ones that I've already bought. Yeah, you can't beat .50 cent books! I need to stay away. My brother should be on his way back from Jamaica today. He's still doing his thing. I told him that he had a fan. :)
