Past Poetry: The Truth

The Truth
By: Stephen Bess
1991

As I sat staring at the white, glowing picture of Jesus
someone spoke to my heart and whispered,

"Don't worship the picture...whorship me."

I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3: "You shall have no other gods before me.
4: "You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
5: you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,
6: but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Genesis 20:1-6

Inspiring post Stephen, keep up the good work :)

Sometimes the less words the better! Again, very touching.

Hey bess. i've been incognito for a while.
Great poem. very good. reminds me--have you heard about the new indie film goin' to the film festival about the modern-day jesus, born in a shack in Africa? Suppose to be controversially amazing.

Hello and Aaaaaaaaaamen!!!!.

Stephen EJ-
How is it going? I did recently hear something about that film. It should be very interesting and wonderfully controversial. I can't wait. :)

Nikki-
You may be a little iniquitous but you got the spirit! Amen sista! :)

I always thought the image of a blond, blue-eyed Jesus rang false with me. He didn't look like anyone I knew, so how could I relate to him or even worship him?

Your poem brought it home for me.

Stephen A. Bess said...

Yes, Sumeeta. I've never felt that he looked like that either. I also don't think that he looked liked Barry White. :)
I no longer think of a face. I try to concentrate on the spirit.

I like the kind of trouble where everybody is happy. It sort of relates to the word "bad" meaning good.

...and yes always meditate on God. I'm trying to become better at that too.

"N" Search of Ecstacy-
Thanks for stopping in! I'm glad that you like my past poetry. I will hopefully be posting more in the very near future.

Wow what touching words. They epitomise everything that's wrong with peoples perception of worship.

Stephen A. Bess said...

I feel that. I think that many people would rather worship Brad Pitt than Danny Devito.
