The Lighter Side of the Blues

Video time: 2:00
This little lady can sing the blues! This is a 4 year old young lady by the name of Nia singing Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. I found this on Youtube. She is wonderful. I'll be back with more women and Blues next week. Enjoy your weekend. Peace~

I would love to see/hear what Nia would have to say 16 years from now i.e when she has a full understanding of what the actual "Strange Fruit" on the tree is or was.

oh wow...Strange Fruit always stirs my soul when I hear it. And to see a small child singing the song with such expression and feeling is amazing. She is adorable. And as you know, I love Billie Holiday. This is one of my favorite songs by her.

Cranky-
She really is so cute!

I love this song too. I read that Billie became physically ill everytime she performed it. Yes, you'll have to make down to Nema next time. It was great! :)

Strange to see a child sing that song. She's a cutie. Strange Fruit, one of the most horrible and beautifully sad and melancholy songs ever written. Billie Holiday, heartbreaker. Thank you, Bess. As usual.

At first (before I heard it) I was with writer on board - horrified at the prospect of such a little girl singing such a weighty and graphic song....But I was charmed. Not only was she adorable, but I think her innocence at what she was singing was strangely wonderful. Thanks, Mr. Bess.

Peace Brother Stephen:

It's been a while.

It's good to see youtube can be used for something other than uploading fist fights and humor that appeals to the lowest common denominator.

Thanks for sharing.

PS. Try not to accidentally venture into PG County. I hear it's a mess now.

I had the same feeling when I saw this child sing this song. I've read Lady Sings The Blues and I knew about the affects that this song had on Billie. But I thought...why not. Thank you.

MJW-
I couldn't have said it better. I completely agree.

ACT-
Hey! Yes, it has been a while. Great to see you and thanks. I love to see this little girl sing. Peace~
