Photography: Busboys, Poets, and Teeth

The line for open mic night at Busboys & Poets here in DC. It was packed with beautiful people.

My brother Thomas and cousin Gary in line. Thomas (far right) is waiting to put his name on the list for open mic.

I just thought that this was interesting and funny. This is located on U street in DC.

Oh snap, why do I know that dentist spot well...neon sign and all...I had to run up in there to price some emergency work once *grinz*.

Funny - it was the sign that drew my attention.

Stephen, there's so much interesting stuff to read here, I have to come back with a cuppa tea, take my time and just dig in...

Stephen,

This is new to me...an open mic is where u can go on stage and read your poem, song...etc?
I suppose at the dentist...u will also need to open your mouth...lol

I really love that sign. Maybe I will just go around town looking for interesting signs. :) Thanks for stopping in.

Hello and welcome! Please comeback. I'll have to stop out and get some good ol' ginger tea. :)

hello suzy. I was a busboy once for an entire day in high school. I quit the next day because I wanted to go to the skating rink with my friends. The year was 1984. :)

blkfeline-
Yes, poets sign up, get up and do their thing. It's really cool. There's so much talent out here. Yes, you are right because either way you have to open those "chops." :)

I've always wanted to stop in to Busboys and Poets...it's so close to my place and so cool in concept and look. I never do go in. But your pics and writings about the place just strengthen my resolve to do so.

I like the place. great drinks and great poetry. The food is okay. It's mostly geared toward vegetarians and I am not even close. :)

I've always wanted to go to an open mic night. Reminds me of Love Jones...

Now you making me wish I would have went!! =)

You know, blk feline, there is another significant connection between dentistry and poetry--pain.

I mean, some of those open mic readers are really really bad.

;)

Kidding. Actually, I was thinking the first time I got up to read behind a mic, it was ... quite like getting in a dentists chair. I was nervous and figured it was going to hurt. Plus I was high on nitrous oxide.

kidding again.

Okay, I'll just shut up.

Darius Lovehall quote:
"Now do they call you daughter to the spinnin post, or
Or maybe Queen of 2,000 moons
Sister to the distant, yet risin’ star
Is your name Yemeya
Oh hell nah, it’s got to be Oshun
Ooo, is that a smile me put on your face child" I love that movie too. :)

Yeah, it was cool.

Hi Stephen! First off, your bro is one fine looking fellow! Second off, sounds like a blast. I have always wanted to go to a open mic night, but do not know where there is one here...

Yes, your blog has Love Jones written all over it.

I'll tell my brother what you said. :)Enjoy the rest of your day. By the way, if you want to see my brother's performance just email me (sbess85@yahoo.com) and I'll send it to you.

I would love to see it, yes. One of my homeboys, Kojo, is an expert at the mic.

Hi Stephen! That would be great! I will send you an e-mail today. By the way, my e-mail will come from Luther Henderson. Just so that you do not think it is spam when you get something from that name. Thank you! Have a great weekend!

You know, I've been to D.C. a few times, and you make it look so much cooler than my experience.

I suppose stuffed shirt people just can't get down.

You've got one beautiful eye. If I'm out East again, I'll have to e-mail and ask where I should hang out in my free time.

Someday I am going to do an open mic. I just fear that I will get stage fright.

Its got to be Oshun.....Did someone call me? ;)
I still have that soundtrack.

you got me wanting to take a trip to DC -- I'll bypass the dentist, but will definitely check out Busboys & Poets. Did you bless the crowd with any of your writing at the mic? You should do an audio clip with your brother and cousin's poems.

It sounds like you had a great time.

Sometimes the stage fright can enhance your performance. :) Well, sometimes.

What's up Oshun! :)I still have that soundtrack too.

michelle-
I did not do anything on the mic. As for an audio clip I have no idea how to do that? :) Send me some instructions and maybe I will.
