Poetry: God's Creation

God's Creation
(For the people of the Caribbean)

SHE IS GOD’S CREATION

I CAN LOOK INTO HER EYES
AND SEE COLUMBUS AT THE MOMENT

SHE DISCOVERED HIM
THERE ARE TRACES OF AN ANCIENT PEOPLE IN HER FACE
OLD FOLK SAY THAT
THE CREATOR BLENDED CLAY WITH WATER FROM THE NIGER AND LAYOU RIVERS TO FORM THE BEAUTY OF HER STRUCTURE…
A SPLENDID MIXTURE OF

SWEET YAMS
and CASSAVA PONE

SHE IS SWEET TOO BAD -- BAD TO THE BONE
THIS EARTHLY ALCHEMY OF INDIGENOUS, AFRICAN, EUROPEAN, AND EAST INDIAN -- TRINI STYLE -- CALYPSO DRIVEN = PURE HUMAN.

What a wonderful tribute, and a lovely cultural tapestry you've woven. Shoot. Got me wishin' I was exotic. Or something. ;)

Peace,
Bay

lol. I think that Black women in the diaspora all have the potential to appear exotic. I remember watching a soccer game with an African friend of mine. Brazil was playing someone and they were showing the audience in the stands. His observation was that some of the Brazilians look just like Black people in America. It's that blend of European, Native American and a big dose of Africa to give that special something. :)

Words woven like thread in an exotic tapestry. Makes me glad to be in the Caribbean.

This morning I was thinking that, despite all the ups and downs here, I'm glad a grew up here instead of abroad.
